.TH BLANKRESD 8 "September 2026" "blankres 0.1.0" "System Administration" .SH NAME blankresd \- crash reporting daemon .SH SYNOPSIS .B blankresd .RB [ \-\-config .IR PATH ] .RB [ \-\-once ] .SH DESCRIPTION .B blankresd watches the systemd journal for core dumps saved by .BR systemd\-coredump (8) and for kernel oopses, and reports them to a crash database. .PP It does not register as the kernel's .B core_pattern handler. By the time a journal entry exists the core has already been written and the crashed process reaped, so the daemon is never on the crash path and never delays restarting a program that has crashed. .PP Reporting happens in two stages. Stage one sends a small event describing the crash: the executable, the package, and a signature computed from the stack trace in the journal message. It contains no memory contents, no command line and no environment, and is sent only if .B telemetry_enabled is set in the configuration. .PP Stage two is the core dump itself. It is collected only when the server's reply asks for one, and is then written to .I /var/crash// for the user to review and consent to. When the server does not ask for a payload the core dump is deleted immediately. .SH OPTIONS .TP .BR \-c ", " \-\-config " " \fIPATH\fR Configuration file. Default .IR /etc/blankres/client.json . .TP .B \-\-once Process what is already in the journal and exit, instead of following it. .SH FILES .TP .I /etc/blankres/client.json Server endpoint, credentials, and the reporting opt-in. .TP .I /var/lib/blankres/state.json Journal cursor, per-signature counts, rate-limit windows, and the salt used to derive the pseudonymous machine identifier. The salt never leaves the machine. .TP .I /var/crash// Payloads awaiting a decision, owned by the crashing user, mode 0700. .SH ENVIRONMENT .TP .B BLANKRES_SERVER_URL Override the configured server URL. .TP .B BLANKRES_TOKEN Override the configured fleet token. .TP .B BLANKRES_TELEMETRY Set to \fB1\fR to enable reporting without editing the configuration file. .SH SEE ALSO .BR blankres (1), .BR blankres-gtk (1), .BR systemd-coredump (8), .BR coredumpctl (1)
